Explorer Atlas: Designing a User-Centred Hybrid Physical–Digital Engagement Platform for Children with Cerebral Visual Impairment

Explorer Atlas is a hybrid physical–digital experience designed to support children with Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) as they engage with the existing I-Vision therapeutic mini-games.

The project combines a physical adventure board with a tablet-based experience. Children choose one of five regions — Sea, Forest, City, Mountain or Desert — and follow a four-stage journey through Departure, Discovery, Challenge and Destination. Adventure Cards introduce short narrative prompts, while the tablet provides access to the I-Vision mini-games, guidance, feedback and rewards.

Rather than replacing or changing the therapeutic activities, Explorer Atlas creates an engaging experience around them. The physical board makes progress visible and tangible, while the digital component manages interactive content and allows progress to continue across different sessions.

The concept was developed through a User-Centred Design process informed by research with children, interviews with children with CVI and their parents, and literature on accessibility, motivation and interaction design.

Explorer Atlas explores how physical play and digital interaction can work together to make repeated therapeutic participation clearer, more meaningful and more engaging.
