Beyond Screens and Metrics

Many people use fitness apps and smartwatches to count steps, track workouts and reach daily goals. These tools can be helpful, but they do not suit everyone. Some people find the numbers useful, while others may feel pressured or may not know where to begin. Beyond Screens and Metrics offers a simple, screen free way to help people become more active. It is a collection of 150 physical cards made mainly for young adults who are new to fitness or exercise casually. Each card has a simple word on the front. On the back, it gives a few easy movement ideas. The suggestions may include stretching, taking a short walk, moving indoors or doing an activity with friends. Users can choose an option based on their mood, energy, available time and current situation. There are no scores, daily targets or activities that must be completed. The cards do not tell users how much they should achieve. They simply offer ideas and allow each person to choose what feels right for them. The project was developed by speaking with young adults, learning about their experiences and testing early versions of the cards. The final collection shows that support for movement can also be physical, simple and flexible. It does not aim to replace fitness apps or smartwatches. It offers another choice for people who want to move without using a screen or focusing on numbers.
