With 19,092 burglaries and related offencses occurring in 2017 (CSO, Ireland), no wonder burglary is one of the most common types of crime experienced by victims. There is a growing number of research evidence to show that burglaries can negatively effect victims, their families and wider communities in many ways, both physically and mentally.
Crime reports have many qualities that can help reduce the rate of burglary in communities. These qualities include, crime mapping, crime trend tracking, identifying how burglar°Øs break-in, the time and locations that crime is most prevalent.
Safer Community is a community-based online reporting system, which aims to raise a high level of awareness about the burglary situation in the neighborhood, educate residents with burglary related knowledge for better prevention and eventually reduce the rate of burglary incidents in residential areas.
All the burglary data generated on the site is from two types of reports: victims°Ø reports and suspicious reports. When any of the reports are received by residents in the neighborhood, they can react immediately, either, keep an eye on suspicious people/vehicles or take specific measures to protect their home. Safer Community also contains visual charts for common burglary-related information that should increase residents burglary knowledge, such as how to deter the burglars.
This site provides a great chance to talk to the neighbors and build a close-knit community. They will be able to share information that will help them and their neighbors establish normal activity in their area.
