Our environments in many ways are formed and influenced by our presence, the patterns of our movements, the sounds we make, by all the conscious and unconscious traces we leave behind. These traces help us interpret our surrounding environments and can often manifest themselves as a form of communication. Domess is a collection of devices that detect various inhabitant activities within a domestic setting and respond to these activities through several unobtrusive ambient feedbacks. It is intended to draw attention to the phenomenon of trace in the home while enhancing them both technically and visually. Domess is designed to encourage playful interaction, while allowing for participation by co-habitants of a space. This concept was refined by employing a user centred design process, involving potential users from the beginning, through participation in workshops and cultural probe studies.
