VirtuPutt is an interactive device that enables users to analyse their golf putting stroke and get feedback on their swings as well as suggested improvements and tips. An accelerometer sensor device connected to an Arduino board is attached to the head of the putter. The accelerometer sensor sends real-time data to Adobe Flash. In Flash the data is visualised to show an onscreen representation of the putting stroke. Users will be able to study key elements of their swing i.e. swing tempo, impact angle of club face and the path of the putter throughout the swing.
The system was designed and evaluated using user-centred design methodologies in order to adapt the design for golfers. The project research looks at how mental preparation and positive thoughts are a key element to getting good results when putting. The physical device contributes to this notion by allowing golfers virtually investigate their own putting strokes and compare their strokes over a period of time.
Research also investigated the condition called ÔyipsŐ, as an uncontrollable twitch or freeze in a golfers hands as they are about to strike the ball. VirtuPutt allows golfers with the condition to see the physical results that the condition has on their putting stroke.
