‘MEMORY_LANE_(dump)’ is a Video Art piece which collages memory fragments from Limerick, Ireland – the artist’s home region. Large volumes of media pertaining to Limerick, from wide-ranging time periods, were gathered from online digital media archives. Generative techniques were used to combine downloaded materials with original landscape footage of the Limerick area shot by the artist. The piece reflects a disoriented fascination of browsing the digital archive’s fractured, anachronistic and mutable sociohistorical perspectives, as well as a sense of the sublime, ineffable volume of past memories that subsist as digital media. The piece invites viewers to contemplate the hauntology and nostalgia of digital media culture, the relationship between digital memory and our physical surroundings, and digital media’s power to shape human remembering and forgetting.
