Time Out: Improving Motivation for Pursuing Fitness and Sport Regularly

With responsibilities either at work, home or college it can be increasingly difficult to make time to pursue fitness and sport regularly. Even among those who try, some can find it challenging to maintain the motivation level required. This project seeks to understand the underlying reasons behind why it is difficult. Using the insights gained through the research process a smartphone app prototype was designed to help people in their pursuit of fitness.
The main outcome from the interviews and literature review was that motivation alone was not enough to pursue fitness. It required persistent discipline and a possible reward which would then act as a trigger to create a habit. It was also found that the presence of peers i.e. doing activities in groups or pairs had a positive motivating effect with regards to fitness. These findings were implemented as part of the app experience.
The app prototype includes capabilities to measure and log personal fitness activities like running, walking and other sports. It also covers a basic nutrition feature that can be used to maintain good health. The final component of the app is a social feature where users can challenge their friends for a fitness duel. It also helps organize doing a fitness session or a sport together. As a finishing touch, the app was called Time Out with the goal of getting people to spend more time, outside.
