Social media is a massive hub for personal expression. This expression, however, often comes through a guise. In this, social media has had an acute effect on the ways in how people can choose to express themselves. Users can create a new persona in the online sphere. This project categorizes popular online persona's by looking at online personality quizzes. The project looks at online quizzes results as a source for a user’s self categorization. Puppet Perception is an interactive installation that aims to reinstate a relationship like that of real world interaction into the social media experience. This project seeks to humanize and dimensionalize social media activity by reintroducing an anthropomorphic element. In the social media realm users can fall into certain tropes. These online tropes lack dimension but as humans we find categorization safe and comfortable for both ourselves and grouping those around us. The project incorporates the elements of the popular online quiz culture. In contrast to the online anonymity status, the rise of the online personality quiz sees users exposing certain facets of their personality. In taking a brief quiz participant’s in the installation are assigned a character which results in the puppets reaction. The quiz probes individual’s usage of social media. Each turn at the quiz can result in a different character assignment. The project brings about an awareness of the often one dimensional nature of portrayals online.
